In the USA, we commonly associate German-language music with marching music and the so-called Schlager. But for several decades, German-speaking acts have been able to take off in the USA again and again. Falco conquered the USA with his hit, Rock Me, Amadeus, as did Nena with her 99 Red Balloons. The success of Rammstein, on the other hand, goes beyond all known limits. In 2020, the group from East Germany wanted to play the stadiums in America for the first time in their career, but it should not come to that.
The band’s relationship with America is ambivalent. For the first time, they caused a sensation with two songs to the David Lynch film Lost Highway’s soundtrack. Nine Inch Nails mastermind Trent Reznor discovered the band and suggested them to Lynch for the film. The success was resounding. So it’s no wonder that the fans celebrated the band’s second album in the USA. With Du Hast, Rammstein even landed a small hit. Their spectacular stage show is perfect for a country where the show effects are often more important than the sound. But first concert tours caused disillusionment. The band had problems with the local authorities in numerous cities, who refused to allow the fiery effects. Rammstein turned away from the US and focused on the rest of the world.
Last Try At Madison Square Garden
That should change in 2010. After the band had already proven reference to the land of unlimited possibilities with a song, they started a new attempt. Rammstein booked Madison Square Garden in New York at their own risk. That happened because no organizer wanted to take the risk of a flop. But that should prove to be a wrong decision. They sold out the city’s most famous concert hall within a few minutes. The show turned out to be a hit. Rammstein subsequently published the video album In Amerika, which illuminated the background and offered a recording of the concert. Then there was a long break that ended with the self-titled comeback album.
Nine years later, the band started their biggest tour to date in Germany. The ticket dealer’s servers had previously collapsed under the onslaught of fans, and they sold out all shows in Europe. The band wanted to repeat this success in the USA. For the first time, the band booked ten dates in North America. However, the events of 2020 forced the group to postpone it for a year. The concerts in autumn 2021 are now on the program. However, it is still questionable whether they can take place. In the worst-case scenario, they must postpone the conquest of the USA again. But one thing seems clear. Rammstein has long been the most successful German-speaking band in the USA. The enormous number of hits on their YouTube-Videos prove that. The gigantic fire show of the current tour will delight fans in the USA and Europe.
